C-ALPS

The Centre for Advanced Low Carbon Propulsion Systems (C-ALPS), a research center at Coventry University under the umbrella of the Centre for E-Mobility and Clean Growth, represents a £50m investment.

C-ALPS consolidates academic prowess and cutting-edge facilities focused on battery technology, hydrogen fuel cells, electric motors, and drives. This collaborative environment fosters research and development for the automotive, aerospace, marine, and rail sectors.

A founding partner, global engineering consultancy FEV, shares space at C-ALPS, benefiting from its association with the Driving the Electric Revolution Industrial Centres Network and funding from the Faraday Institution and UKRI sources. Additionally, C-ALPS engages with Batteries European Partnership Association and Hydrogen Europe.

Operating independently, C-ALPS and FEV engage with various stakeholders, including OEMs and SMEs, facilitating research projects and offering expertise in product development, funding applications, and consultancy services. The 40,000 sq. ft state-of-the-art facility in Coventry, backed by over £20m in investments, serves as a beacon of innovation in low carbon propulsion research, supporting businesses through knowledge transfer programmess and collaborative endeavours.

Services

C-ALPS, known for supervising industry-focused PhD projects at FEV, now invites proposals from e-mobility businesses.

Access its top-notch facilities and expertise flexibly, and reach your desired research outcomes. Proudly part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme, C-ALPS collaborate with regional and national businesses to enhance competitiveness, productivity, and performance, partly funded by Innovate UK.

A KTP involves recruiting graduates for unique projects backed by university expertise. C-ALPS also actively engage in EPSRC-funded academic research and engineering fellowship schemes, welcoming industry partners to shape project directions.

With vast experience in funding collaborative projects, the research centre offers specific deliverables through industrially experienced staff. Its expertise spans cell prototyping, testing, instrumentation, power device characterisation, EMC chamber testing, and e-motor/drive testing.

State-of-the-art battery test facilities

The battery testing laboratory at C-ALPS is fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and expert personnel. It assists partners in characterising the performance of both commercial and prototype cells and modules. Its services aid in the verification, selection, and modelling activities crucial for advancing battery technology.

Cell prototyping centre of excellence

The specialised cell prototyping facilities at C-ALPS facilitate the journey from laboratory breakthroughs to mid Technology Readiness Level (TRL) prototypes, bridging the gap in development known as the ‘Valley of Death’ and propelling novel discoveries towards commercial fruition.

Electronics lab and power-semiconductor characterisation facility

Proficiency in power semiconductors and semiconductor device performance aids industrial collaborators in crafting high-efficiency, high-power-density power converter systems. This facilitates the rapid integration of wide band-gap devices while enhancing performance through digital modelling techniques.

Hydrogen research laboratory and vehicle workshops

A new, 100m2 hydrogen fuel-cell research lab was completed in 2021 for cell and short stack research and development including facilities for post-mortem analysis. This on-site hydrogen storage facility has the capacity to house tube/trailer supporting 18kg/hr usage rate (300kW).

EMC chamber

A recently established EMC chamber offers a collaborative environment for partners to leverage C-ALPS expertise and cutting-edge equipment. Here, you can proactively address potential issues with power hardware, effectively minimising risks associated with product development and technology implementation.

e-Powertrain system research

C-ALPS integrate cutting-edge powertrain testing facilities with specialised knowledge in power electronics, motors, and drive systems. Its partners have the opportunity to leverage this expertise and state-of-the-art facilities for the characterisation and enhancement of propulsion systems.

Powertrain system test cells

FEV’s operational sites for commercial purposes boast more than £6 million worth of cutting-edge testbeds and benches dedicated to electrified powertrains and thermodynamic engines. These facilities encompass testing capabilities for turbochargers, catalytic converters, and battery systems.

Battery & supercapacitor cell sensing

C-ALPS research into cell sensing and advanced diagnostics encompasses the development of cell materials and construction techniques, validation methodologies, modelling, and their utilisation in mission-critical or safety-critical applications.

C-ALPS is the most advanced test facility of its kind in the UK.

This unique 40,000 sq. ft research and test centre in Coventry is perfectly positioned to help GreenTech and Net Zero innovators accelerate the progression of their technologies, and enter the market with confidence.
